(December 16, 2014) Del Walmsley: Saying No To The Mantra of “The Workin Man”

Listen Now

Life does not have to be lived in the fleeting moments after work is over, and it would seem apparent that many people these days realize just that, but do they act on it? Switching gears a tad, it seems quite ironic that one of the foremost rock bands of the 70’s (RUSH) would see fit to perform a song chronicling the life of your average working man. What had Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart done to feel compelled to sing about a life so far removed from their own – so beneath that of the rock gods they were and still are today? Obviously, they all likely had a deeper philosophical explanation of their own, but we would like to posit that it was to strike a chord of aspiration in their listeners; don’t despair and don’t reserve yourself to a cold beer and a numbing regiment that is devoid of meaning. Now, Del won’t turn a tune for you on this LU podcast, but he will show you how one of his favorite songs about a life he would never live, was his biggest impetus to turn from it.
